Alto saxophonist Willie Smith was among Gene Krupa's favorite reedmen, and as most everyone knows, he was the stellar soloist on the famed Drum Boogie date at Carnegie Hall in 1952 that was the basis of the Original Drum Battle recording. These are probably the last sides Willie ever recorded as a leader, done in 1965 on the west coast. Here's Willie like you've never heard him, in two sessions, with sidemen that include Tommy Gumina, Jimmy Rowles, Johnny Guanieri, Bill Perkins and Stan Levey.
