Gene's partner in the famed Krupa/Cole drum school had a fluke record hit in 1958, entitled Topsy Parts One and Two. Here it is on CD for the first time in all its glory, along with 22 other recordings Cole did through 1965, in an effort to duplicate the hit record. He never did, and some of the results are truly bizzare, with rock beats, voices, organs, spoken intros by Cozy himself, remakes of Sing Sing Sing, Big Noise From Winnetka and Sandy Nelson's Let There Be Drums. You can't fault him for tryin', and though Cozy's style is stiffer and more rudimental than most, his soloing is quite, quite close to Gene's and the charts here, many supposedly by Dick Hyman, are novel.
