"Network Gene" gathers all the national television news network's coverage of the death of Gene Krupa, the announcement that he was suffering from leukemia, etc. Though most are brief, jazz fan and news anchor John Chancellor does an extended tribute to Gene that is worth the price of admission. There is also a neat piece anchored by Howard K. Smith from about 1970 that tells of the new found popularity of swing. Gene is interviewed, and plays a bit in his Yonker's basement. And from 1978, there is network news coverage of the 40th anniversary of the Carnegie Hall concert, an interview with Goodman, Whitney Balliet, etc. It appears to us that there are snippets of the 1938 Carnegie Hall concert that we've never seen before. Fleshing out this must have DVD are two, "Stars of Jazz" tv shows from 1958, hosted by Bobby Troup, and featuring, among many others, Dave Pell, Charlie Barnet and Peggy King.
